Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine is currently accepting application to fill the temporary position of Diagnostic Services Technician
OVERVIEW
· THIS IS A TEMPORARY CONTRACT POSITION
· Performs routine and standardized biological and
biochemical examinations and analyses; in a
training capacity to learn to perform specialized
analytical examinations and procedures; perform
related work.
· Work safely with potentially pathogenic organisms
and materials, toxic, volatile, and corrosive
chemicals and carcinogenic substances.
DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
Hematology:
· Blood smear preparation, staining, blood cell
counting (including white and red blood cell
counts), differential counts, platelet counts,
evaluation of blood cell morphology, hemoglobin and
hematocrit estimations, and calculation of
hematological index. Evaluate smear for
hemoparasites.
· Be able to perform coagulation profiles and cross
matching.
· Routine evaluation of laboratory tests for
hemoparasites (e.g. heartworm (microfilariae) as
supervised by the laboratory director, manager
and/or Professor.)
Clinical Chemistry
· Perform all different types of routine chemistry
analyses on blood, serum and plasma. This includes
analyses performed by use of chemistry analyzers
and also manual tests as required.
· The duties include appropriate maintenance of
analytical instruments, basic knowledge about
instrumentation and trouble shooting for erroneous
analyzer results, when required.
Parasitology
Fecal analysis to include the following:
· Fecal Flotation, Modified McMaster and Baermann
techniques, Wet Mount and Fecal Occult Blood tests.
· Identification of larval and adult stages of
ectoparasites and endoparasites. Whole blood
analysis including Modified Knott’s, Wet Mount and
examination for hemoparasites.
· Identify parasites in skin scrapings, ear swabs and
cellophane tape submissions.
Urinalysis
Urine examination according to routine procedures for chemical and cellular components including microscopic evaluation and back-up tests.
Cytology
· Preparation of microscopic slides for cytology and
other microscopic examinations, including
evaluation of slides for external (skin) parasites
for routine purposes.
· Assisting in cytology as indicated by the lab
director, manager and/or Professor.
Microbiology:
· Perform routine standardized biological,
microbiological and biochemical examinations and
analyses. Prepare media which includes
sterilization, pouring plates, and tubes.
· Receive samples and prepare them, which includes
understanding aseptic/sterile technique, streak
plating of bacteria, staining procedures, culture
and sensitivity and microscopy.
Serology:
Perform routine serological tests including ELISAs, imunoflorescent antibody tests, snap tests, etc. (with appropriate training). This encompasses serology for parasites, bacteria, fungi and viruses as required.
Student Labs:
· Preparation of laboratory work in the regular
teaching schedule for veterinary students at RUSVM.
· This includes all necessary preparations,
collections, clean-up and proper disposal for the
following student labs: Clinical Pathology
(hematology, urinalysis and cytology), Microbiology
(bacteriology and mycology) and Parasitology
(fecal, blood, urine examination and parasite
identification). Preparation of laboratory work in
the teaching program and schedule for veterinary
students at RUSVM. This includes all sample
collection and other necessary preparations. The
technician is required to assist the students in
the practical laboratory and other training (e.g.
large animal facility) in parasitology.
Research:
Conduct sample analyses in any of the above or novel disciplines. Be capable of learning new techniques and new analyzer methodology. Give meticulous attention to data recording.
General Laboratory Responsibilities:
· Prepare laboratory reagents for all disciplines as
supervised.
· Cleaning, washing and regular maintenance of
laboratory instruments and equipment. The duties
include appropriate maintenance of analytical
instruments, basic knowledge about instrumentation
and trouble shooting for erroneous analyzer
results, when required.
· Routine quality assurance programs need to be
observed for all equipment.
· Ensure that the laboratory is kept clean, organized
and well maintained.
· Regular inventory of basic reagents and supplies;
advise the supervising lab manager and/or professor
of supplies required to be ordered.
· Catalogue, freeze and label all serum samples.
· The Diagnostic services technician’s carries out
additional duties and responsibilities assigned by
the laboratory director, manager and/or Professor
as needed.
